Flip a coin

Written on January 8th, 2009 by Juddno shouts

Soucheray has an idea for the most dignified ending to the the Coleman vs. Franken race:

What we need is a margin of victory that is mathematically bulletproof, not one-half of 1 percent. I don’t know what that margin is, but a mathematician could come up with it based on vote totals. Out of 2.9 million votes cast, there would have to be a margin of victory that could not be automatically challenged as questionable. One vote below that number would call for the coin flip — yes, a coin flip.

A coin flip would have been more honest and contained more dignity than this slop we just endured. It takes all mischief off the table. Ceremonial coins could have been minted with Norm’s face on one side and Al’s face on the other. The coin would be showed to the television cameras before the toss. The candidates wouldn’t even have to call it. If their face survives the flip, they win.

The “right” to win

Thomas Sowell hits yet another home run with his column today, discussing our entitlement to win:

Apparently Mormons don’t have the same rights as other Americans, at least not if they don’t vote the way gay activists want them to vote.

There was another gay activist mob gathered outside a Mormon temple in Orange County, California.

In the past, gay activists have disrupted Catholic services and their “gay pride” parades in San Francisco have crudely mocked nuns.

While demanding tolerance from others, gay activists apparently feel no need to show any themselves.

We often have joked that in Minnesota high school sports (and I highly doubt that our situation is much different than other states), the moment they went to 5 or 6 classes (no lie) in football, 4 or 5 in basketball, 3 in baseball and softball, and 2 in hockey, they might as well have just handed out a trophy to everyone before the season and then let them all play each other to find the best team.  Apparently many of these activist groups have taken that caricature and run with it.

“Material cooperation with intrinsic evil”

Written on November 14th, 2008 by Juddno shouts

There have been several news reports about the priest who told Obama voters they should not take communion.  Turns out the priest also wrote the very best thing published in a church bulletin that Feast of St. John Lateran.

“Dear Friends in Christ,

We the People have spoken, and the 44th President of the United States will be
Barack Hussein Obama. This election ends a political process that started two
years ago and which has revealed deep and bitter divisions within the United
States and also within the Catholic Church in the United States. This division is
sometimes called a “Culture War,” by which is meant a heated clash between
two radically different and incompatible conceptions of how we should order our
common life together, the public life that constitutes civil society. And the chief
battleground in this culture war for the past 30 years has been abortion, which
one side regards as a murderous abomination that cries out to Heaven for
vengeance and the other side regards as a fundamental human right that must be
protected in laws enforced by the authority of the state. Between these two
visions of the use of lethal violence against the unborn there can be no
negotiation or conciliation, and now our nation has chosen for its chief executive
the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate
or to run for president. We must also take note of the fact that this election was
effectively decided by the votes of self-described (but not practicing) Catholics,
the majority of whom cast their ballots for President-elect Obama.
In response to this, I am obliged by my duty as your shepherd to make two
observations:

1. Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits
constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do
so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ’s Church and under
the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy
Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of
Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation.

2. Barack Obama, although we must always and everywhere disagree with him
over abortion, has been duly elected the next President of the United States, and
after he takes the Oath of Office next January 20th, he will hold legitimate
authority in this nation. For this reason, we are obliged by Scriptural precept to
pray for him and to cooperate with him whenever conscience does not bind us
otherwise. Let us hope and pray that the responsibilities of the presidency and
the grace of God will awaken in the conscience of this extraordinarily gifted man
an awareness that the unholy slaughter of children in this nation is the greatest
threat to the peace and security of the United States and constitutes a clear and
present danger to the common good. In the time of President Obama’s service to
our country, let us pray for him in the words of a prayer found in the Roman
Missal:

God our Father, all earthly powers must serve you. Help our President-elect,
Barack Obama, to fulfill his responsibilities worthily and well. By honoring and
striving to please you at all times, may he secure peace and freedom for the
people entrusted to him. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.”
God bless this holy and brave priest.

Blind trust

Written on November 4th, 2008 by Judd3 shouts

I echo the sentiments of some that is incredible for the country that we are able to elect a black President so recently after a period of slavery, but I also echo the sentiments that I am unable to get caught up in the hype.  We enter a time in our country when there are more questions than answers, and many of those questions are ones that could have been asked before this election and weren’t.  I don’t like the prospects for correcting a poor court decision in Roe vs. Wade for at least 50 years from this coming January, and it is only when we go back to choosing life that our country will prosper again.  I don’t like that we just elected the most unqualified president in our nation’s history, either.  It is not John McCain’s fault, and it’s not Sarah Palin’s fault.  The best thing that came out of this unwinnable election was that we have a new conservative leader and a new pro-life leader in Sarah Palin.  The honorable campaign McCain ran and is introduction of Sarah Palin to America were two great services by a great man.  The blame falls squarely on four groups of people:

1.  The Republican Base that took a chance on Obama by not showing up to vote today.
2.  The blind-trust liberals, who mistook this election as The American Idol.
3.  The conservatives who should have voted for McCain to prevent Obama, and instead voted 3rd party.
4.  The mainstream media.  Fortunately for us, it was their last hurrah, their last solid influence on American politics.  They failed us to an infinite degree, and in the process they have exposed themselves.

Get some rest while you can.  We have four sleepless years ahead of us.

We are left with this

Written on November 3rd, 2008 by Juddno shouts

When all of the campaigning is said and done, we are left with a clear choice: a true, American hero who brings a lifetime of experience and clearly patriotic intentions to the White House, or one who has has said one thing, done another, and that is all we seem to know about him.

If you are a liberal, your clear choice is to vote for Barack Obama.  He’s a dream come true for liberals.  I concede that.

If you are a conservative, your clear choice is to vote for John McCain.  Even those of you whose principles don’t make it easy — I’m among them — the risk is far too great to actually fill in another circle or push another button when you enter the voting booth.  Please maintain your principles, keep your vote for McCain to yourself, and keep working for the party to return to it’s conservative agenda.  Your vote is too important to throw away on a third party candidate.  The risk is too great to do one little thing to give an edge to Obama.  Take a step for moderation when you enter the polls (none of us will be any the wiser) and maintain your conservative agenda (I’m with you).

Moderates, there is only one choice for you here:  John McCain. Obama is the most liberal candidate of many of our lifetimes and, to make matters worse, he has Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid drooling over what to do with your money, drooling over cutting our defense budget and weakening us worldwide, and drooling over greater regulations that will hurt jobs and cause higher prices for consumers (worse than any tax increase — we can’t help but buy gas and milk).  McCain *is* a moderate, as evidenced by ultra-conservatives problem with him.

Most of all, though, if you are holding a six shooter with one bullet in it, you’d be a fool to pull the trigger. You simply don’t know the ramifications of what Obama brings to our nation.  He’s still a mystery, and one that at the very least needs four more years of vetting.  Give the country four more years to make up their mind on Obama, and keep our country safe from terrorists, from a weaker economy, from a smaller job force, and from a country of no moral standing.  Vote for John McCain.

Mary, mother of God and Queen of Victory, watch over our nation as we head to the polls tomorrow.  Lord, keep all of us safe in our travels, and may the Holy Spirit inspire us to do Your holy will.  Help us all to accept the results as part of your perfect plan.  Most of all, convert all of us to do more to help the unborn, the sick, and the elderly.  Let us keep the first commandment in mind and worship you as our God, and to treat politics as a means of doing Your will, not as another religion.  Help us to keep Your second commandment, and make our vote in the interests of those who cannot vote for themselves.  Amen.

Solemn Novena to Our Lady of Victory Lord, have mercy on us, Christ, have mercy on us, Christ, hear us, Christ, graciously hear us. God, the Father of Heaven, Have mercy on us. God, the Son, Redeemer of the world, Have mercy on us.

God, the Holy Spirit, Have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, One God, Have mercy on us. The response for the following greetings is Pray for us. Our Lady of Victory, Victorious daughter of the Father, Victorious Mother of the Son, Victorious Spouse of the Holy Spirit, Victorious servant of the Holy Trinity Victorious in your Immaculate Conception, Victorious in crushing the serpent’s head, Victorious over all the children of Adam, Victorious over all enemies, Victorious in your response to the Angel Gabriel, Victorious in your wedding to St. Joseph, Victorious in the birth of Christ, Victorious in the flight to Egypt, Victorious in your exile, Victorious in your home at Nazareth, Victorious in finding Christ in the temple, Victorious in the mission of your Son, Victorious in His passion and death, Victorious in His Resurrection and Ascension, Victorious in the Coming of the Holy Spirit, Victorious in your sorrows and joys, Victorious in your glorious Assumption, Victorious in the angels who remained faithful, Victorious in the happiness of the saints, Victorious in the message of the prophets, Victorious in the testimony of the patriarchs, Victorious in the zeal of the apostles, Victorious in the witness of the evangelists, Victorious in the wisdom of the doctors, Victorious in the deeds of the confessors, Victorious in the triumph of all holy women, Victorious in the faithfulness of the martyrs, Victorious in your powerful intercession, Victorious under your many titles, Victorious at the moment of death, Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Spare us, Lord. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Hear us, Lord. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Have mercy, Lord. Pray for us, blessed Lady of Victory. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Our Lady of Victory, we have unshaken confidence in your influence with your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. Humbly we ask your intercession for all of us associated under your title, Our Lady of Victory. We beg your powerful assistance also for our own personal needs. (Please mention here your special intention in you own words.) In your maternal kindness please ask Jesus to forgive all our sins and failings, and to secure His blessings for us and for all the works of charity dedicated to your name. We implore you to obtain for us the grace of sharing Christ’s victory and yours forever in the life that knows no ending. May we join you there to praise forever the Father, His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, on God, for all the ages to come. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, You told us to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. Enlighten the minds of our people [in] America. May we choose a President of the United States, and other government officials, according to Your Divine Will. Give our citizens the courage to choose leaders of our nation who respect the sanctity of unborn human life, the sanctity of marriage, the sanctity of marital relations, the sanctity of the family, and the sanctity of the aging. Grant us the wisdom to give You, what belongs to You, our God. If we do this, as a nation, we are confident You will give us an abundance of Your blessings through our elected leaders. Amen.

Barack Obama: Bad for business, bad for you

Written on November 2nd, 2008 by Juddno shouts

Barack Obama has presented a clear plan for his presidency as it applies to business, small and large:

  1. Raise taxes on those making over $250,000 (or $200,000, or $150,00, or $120,000, or whatever the latest number happens to be) — this will cripple some businesses from even doing business, others from keeping their workforce in tact, let alone creating new growth and jobs, and also raise prices on the services and goods they provide for the consumer (they have to make it back somewhere).
  2. Mandate health care or impose fines — health care is one of the largest costs to businesses these days, and often times the businesses are having to pass along a large portion of the cost to the worker.  Mandatory coverage from businesses will, first of all, require a certain kind of health care (the health care of Obama’s choosing).  Second, it will make it very tough for businesses on the verge of hiring new employees to afford them as the health care they are required to give them will be the deal-breaker.
  3. More regulations — more regulations means more expense for business.  This is just the same as raising taxes on business, and that means under Obama, business would get the triple-whammy in terms of making it more difficult for growth and hiring new employees.
  4. Higher prices — I touched on this in bullet one, but higher prices is also bad for business, and clearly with the first three of these points the prices can only follow.  Higher prices are bad for the consumer, and they lead to less production of goods and a smaller economy (as we are witnessing with the .3% decline in our GDP).

This is a short and fast list of four undeniable reasons for why Obama is bad for business.  One can also see how this will affect middle-class America.  When business struggles, so do Americans.  We need to encourage growth in our economy again, not socialist wealth-sharing that will bring complacency.  We are the greatest nation in the world, and we need to continue to act like it.

Vote McCain-Palin for a stronger business climate in our country, and to keep businesses operating here instead of going overseas to avoid Obama’s crippling policies.

Murdoch: Obama would make economy worse

Written on November 1st, 2008 by Juddno shouts

The Australian-born mogul, who controls media interests around the world, also criticised Obama’s proposed tax policies which include granting rebates to most US workers.

“Forty percent (of the US population) don’t pay taxes, so how can he give them a tax cut?” he said.

“But you can give them a welfare cheque which he has promised — a grant of 500 dollars — which will disappear very fast. It’s not going to turn the economy around at all.”

Not that this hasn’t been said, but consider the people who have said this.

Michael Malone writes about the bias and decline of the media, and where they have gotten the gumption to do what they are doing. The whole thing is so good that I will not do the injustice of quoting a paragraph or two.  Just read it.
