State Tournament QFs thoughts

The Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament field is set and it looks like a great one yet again this year. Taking a look at the Class AA games on Thursday, here's the way I see it. White Bear Lake vs. Duluth East: I never got to see Duluth East play this year, but I'd have to say that looking at the schedules, White Bear Lake looks like the stronger of the two teams. White Bear Lake outplayed a very, very good Centennial team (the defending champs) on Friday night in front of an over-full Coliseum crowd. Other than two very soft goals, Centennial only had one other one. If East can get their share of the soft goals, they stand a chance. Otherwise I look for White Bear Lake to win by 2 or 3 goals. Moorhead vs. Rochester Century: Moorhead is one of the top few teams in the state and, let's face it, the section Rochester teams play in is generally one of the weaker sections in the state. I look for Moorhead to win by a solid 4 or 5 goals. Holy Angels vs. Bloomington Jefferson: This one will likely be the most exciting game of Thursday's bunch, and perhaps of the whole tournament. These are two free-wheeling teams that won't likely get in each other's way. The offenses will show up for this one, and I look for Holy Angels to edge Jefferson in a 5-4ish type of game. Elk River vs. Tartan: This one is really anyone's guess. I saw both of these two teams play last weekend and neither was all that impressive. Tartan was outplayed by Woodbury in the final couple of periods but got a couple of soft goals and skated to a 4-2 victory. Elk River was outplayed in the section finals vs. Osseo, but their goalie was hot and the Elks three unanswered goals gave them a 4-1 win. I'd give Elk River the nod in a tight game due to their strong schedule all year. This is one that could be a Thursday night classic, however, as it promises to be a close one.
