As blogger James Mirtle pointed out on Monday, Luongo likely hasn't forgotten his shabby treatment by Panthers GM Mike Keenan last summer.
Keenan tried playing hardball with Luongo, but prior to going into arbitration offered him a five-year, $25 million contract. The Luongo camp rejected it, whereas Mirtle notes Keenan subsequently claimed in the arbitration hearing that his star goaltender wasn't worth that kind of money.
Shabby treatment? The fact of the matter is that Keenan offered to make him the highest paid goaltender at the time, and if that's shabby then what's acceptable?
Just another cheap shot at Mike Keenan. I'm not terribly pleased with the club right now, but this business about Luongo is simply the goalie thinking it might be worth going to a more successful team. That's fine, and it's his choice when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, but his choice will simply be between Florida and more successful teams. $5 million per year with the new salary caps is a superstar contract, and nothing short of it. Hardly shabby by any measure.
