Olympic hockey, iced

Written on June 8th, 2006 by Judd

The men’s and women’s hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics will be played on the smaller, NHL-sized ice surface, a move that will save organizers of the Vancouver Games $10 million in construction costs.

This is very unfortunate.  The men’s olympic hockey is the best hockey in the world, and largely in part to the huge ice surface.  Couple this with the pickier officiating, and I have a feeling the olympics will be nothing more than a power-play festival.  If you don’t have the right sized rinks or can’t do the $10 mil. to upgrade, you should not be hosting the olympics.
