Exciting hockey

The Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament has not dissapointed. Holy Angels last night immediately answered the first "Public Schools" chant by scoring a goal on their first shot of the game. Perfect. My contention always was that the best response to any one of those chants was not "We've got Jesus," but instead "Scoreboard!" In any case, tonight's AA Final features two unbelievable teams. The semis last night, though, have me wondering whether Holy Angels has much of a chance against Moorhead. The Spuds completely destroyed Duluth East last night, and AHA had more trouble with Tartan than I would have expected. Still, games against common opponents suggest that this one will be competitive. The three common opponents between these teams were all very good hockey teams: White Bear Lake, Hill-Murray, and Centennial (all 3AA teams). Holy Angels was 1-1-2 against these teams while Moorhead was 3-2-1 against the same teams. Holy Angels beat Hill Murray 8-4, lost to Centennial 9-3, and tied White Bear Lake twice (3-3 and 4-4). Moorhead split with Hill-Murray (7-4 win and 4-3 loss), split with White Bear Lake (3-2 win, 2-0 loss), beat Centennial once, 5-3, and tied them the other time, 0-0. Both teams have excellent goaltending (an obvious trait if you make it this far in the tournament). The intangibles are about split. Both teams have great coaches and plenty of tournament experience. Hopefully Holy Angels has the firepower to make this game a great one. Note: I found the scores very easily at the fantastic minnhock.com site. It's a wealth of Minn. high school hockey information.

The thing is you can’t use the “Scoreboard” response with credibility until the game is over, or you have a commanding lead (3+ goals).

I beg to differ, and in fact would love to see someone do the “season’s over” chant after the first goal of the game. That would be a good chuckle.

Congrats to the Stars! I was loving every minute of it (even though I went to a different Catholic school, in St. Paul — no, not that one — St. Agnes).
