  • No bitching, but, I respectfully disagree.

  • Judd says:

You must disagree with yourself, then (which is highly likely considering the position you have that McCain is a much better option than Obama), because the variables are quite simple.

There were 2 possible outcomes and three (simplified) ways to vote.

    The outcomes:

    1. Obama wins (Terrible)
    2. McCain wins (Distinctively better than terrible, by your own admission)

    The three ways to vote:
    1. Obama
    2. McCain
    3. Someone else

If you prefer outcome 1, you vote for Obama. If you prefer outcome 2, you vote McCain. By choosing outcome 3, you are actively deciding that neither outcome is preferable to the other and you are willing to accept whatever it is without making a statement.

Basically, you have no basis on which to complain because, in terms of the president, your action brought you no closer to the preferred possible outcome than someone who didn’t vote. As I’ve said before, I have no problem with you supporting a third-party candidate up to the point of election day, but when you went into the voting booth it was clear that there were two possibilities. Sometimes, David, principles only go so far. Reality sets in and sometimes you have to figure out the situation and make the best of it.

I don’t see that there is anything to respectfully disagree with but yourself.

  • Judd,

Instead of attacking third party voters as I feel you have, you should be concentrating on the distinct differences between Obama and McCain. I just want to be completely honest with you – you are making me want to vote for third parties even more! And I doubt your arguments which have seemed to turn to attacks “bitching from third party voters” will make any third party voter NOT want to vote third party. I don’t know if your goal is turning third party voters into two-party voters, but if it is it really simply is not working. This will be my last post on your blog concerning voting, even if you write up some attack on the few words I left you with.

  • Judd says:

    David,

To those who much has been given so, too, is great responsibility. You and I both were fortunate enough to know the two possible outcomes of this election, and so great responsibility was also thrust on us. If my disappointment with you and other third party voters who knew better seems greater than with those who didn’t, good — it is. If you want to take a victory out of this, take it that I considered you one of those unlikely to vote for McCain if there was a better possible outcome to, by election day, realize that you were best off choosing the better of two imperfect situations.

And if I seem hostile, it is because immediately after it was all said and done and you didn’t weigh in on the situation in a meaningful way, at the voting booth, you came here to slam Obama, as if to say “How could the American people do this?” First off, I don’t know. Second of all, you can look in the mirror and ask yourself because you know better than me.

I won’t apologize for thinking this way. It’s the truth. And if I seem angry, I am. Millions of lives depend on people who “get it” to go out and make sure that their right to life is fought for. Unfortunately there are plenty of you out there who are more interested in your pocketbook or some other ridiculously unequal principle that never was going to be successful in 2008 anyway.

    Judd
