Say what you want about 9.11, Iraq, and Katrina, but there is one thing that is sure to help (true) conservatives, and that is the upcoming vote on Roberts alongside the nomination for the second vacancy on the Supreme Court. It is the ultimate exposure of poor logic and reasoning on the part of many Democrats, while it is promotional for others. The latest victim of President Bush’s masterful politics is none other than Hillary Clinton. She announced yesterday that she would oppose Roberts despite her praise for him as a judge.
Also tonight, Sen. Clinton announced her opposition to Roberts. In a statement that praises his “intellect, character and legal skills” she concludes that she just can’t bring herself to vote for him after all. She acknowledges that he’ll likely be confirmed, which makes it all the more puzzling why she’d use up this bullet at this time. By doing so, she joins a cadre of the most liberal Senators, including two failed Presidential candidates, Kennedy and Kerry. An interesting (if somewhat puzzling) move on her part. Why wouldn’t she join the bandwagon here, move to the center and live to fight the next nominee?
Now Clinton can easily be identified as a partisan hack alongside Kennedy, Biden, and Schumer, a damning realization for anyone with presidential hopes (see John Kerry’s campaign against a struggling incumbent). These people are put in the terrible situation of having to decide whether to please the MoveOn people and its crowd, or to use reasonable judgment toward a nominee like Roberts and vote for him based on his superior judicial skill. My hunch is that one would have an easier time being elected if they did the latter, as it seems there would be ways to please the liberal activists later. Clinton is now easily placed to the left of even the Washington Post and New York Times, which both endorsed Roberts for the Chief Justice position. It doesn’t get much worse than that for a presidential hopeful (though we know where the WaPo and Times would place their support if Hillary were to run for President, 2008).
It is now time for President Bush to push the envelope one further, and nominate a Janice Rogers Brown for the open spot. Let’s now expose the bad Republicans once and for all, and if Brown is denied confirmation, Bush will live to make another nomination.
