Archbishop: Can’t Be Pro-Abortion Catholic, No Communion for Abortion Backers #fb

Written on July 29th, 2010 by JuddTweet this! no shouts
Carlson says that request of abortion backers to refrain from receiving the sacrament is not “mean or judgmental” but the Catholic Church is “simply acknowledging the fact that such a stance is objectively and seriously sinful and is radically inconsistent with the Christian way of life.

It is nice to see our Bishops (finally) standing firm and prominent on this issue. Huge damage has been done, and we can’t afford to let silence lead to more damage.

Dallas Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant says no to tradition, won’t carry Roy Williams’ shoulder pads – ESPN Dallas

Written on July 26th, 2010 by JuddTweet this! no shouts

Williams gave his pads to Bryant after Sunday’s morning practice, but Bryant declined to carry them. Williams threatened to go to “step two” when talking to reporters.

“I’m not doing it,” Bryant said. “I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player’s pads.”

This is interesting. I’m not quite sure what to think about this, but I tend toward agreeing with Dez Bryant. Maybe if organizations had a little more regard for the dignity of the human person, these guys would shape out to be…better people. Dues are one thing, but no one should be above carrying their pads or someone else’s when that someone else NEEDS them carried.

Windows 7 64-bit freezing issue — a battle won?

Written on July 18th, 2010 by JuddTweet this! 2 shouts

I have been battling with my computer, an HP tower, for almost 2 months now. A while before this started I had installed Windows 7 64-bit and had been loving it. All of a sudden I started to get freezes after some period of inactivity, or even shutting down the monitors. In some instances it would still be accessible via Remote Desktop, but no movement of the mouse or banging on the keyboard would wake up the monitors. And, once or twice the Windows + P would wake up the monitor (switching modes for projector, dual monitor, etc.) but as soon as I clicked on one thing, be it to minimize a window, launch a program, or even the start button, it would freeze immediately.

I thought back to when the problems started and the only thing I could think of was that I had added a 2nd external USB hard drive. I disconnected those and (with the use of hindsight now) it coincidentally solved the problem…for a very short time (like a day). Clearly there was something else at work to keep it “alive” at that time, and it wasn’t an issue with the drives.

Fortunately I had recently attended a couple of IT Professional courses on Windows 7 and recalled a “Reliability History” application. You can find this by clicking start and typing in the box “View Reliability History” or some part of it and clicking the icon. I could trace back, very specifically, when I started having the “forced shutdowns.” Being I hadn’t done anything substantial at the time the issues started, I figured the next step was to start uninstalling the Windows Updates that had been installed at the time. I installed a bunch, to no avail. A few days ago, though, I uninstalled three more and have been running rock-solid ever since. The update I believe solved the problem, itself, is this one:

Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows 7 (KB981078)

I had also uninstalled these two on the same day, so there is an outside chance these are the culprit:

Update for Windows 7 (KB980846)
Update for Windows 7 (KB982519)

If you have similar issues to mine, give that a try. Please let me know in the comments if you can narrow it down on your machine. I’d like to install any update that isn’t the problem, but for now I’m just glad to have my machine stable and available when I want to use it (locally or remotely).

I read so much documentation and tried so many things on so many blog and forum posts, I’d be remiss not to mention that. However, it was the cumulative knowledge gained that helped me and I can’t point to any specific article to credit. Thanks to all who post their issues and the solutions when found.

Keenan did not ruin Blues franchise

Written on July 17th, 2010 by JuddTweet this! no shouts

Keenan was a strange dude, and certainly seemed to enjoy playing the role of the bad guy. He almost wanted to be disliked. And I don’t defend him except for this: Thursday I had more than a few people express their disgust with Keenan, saying how he’d ruined the Blues franchise. I’m sorry, Keenan did a lot of crazy things, and had a maddening style. But he didn’t ruin the franchise. Keenan was fired in ‘97. Over the next six seasons the Blues had the NHL’s fifth-best winning percentage (.609), won the President’s Trophy (league’s best record) in 1999-2000, and had two consecutive seasons off 100+ plus points (1999-00, 2000-01).

So how did Keenan ruin the franchise?

Thank you, Bernie. This is one of the longest-running NHL fallacies. People may have had differences of opinion with how to move forward with the franchise, but one can’t say he ruined it. In fact, considering how many teams have won with Chris Pronger, it is only reasonable to suggest that he improved the franchise.

We need support from the federal government. It’s their job to secure the border and they haven’t done it,” said Babeu. “In fact, President Obama suspended the construction of the fence and it’s just simply outrageous.

It looks like a relatively small band of criminals can easily take land from the US and make it their own. What a circus.

Joe Soucheray: Who was Helen Thomas? White House reporter extraordinaire or overhyped shrew? #tcot #fb

Written on June 10th, 2010 by JuddTweet this! no shouts
By not understanding it, I mean that I can’t say I ever read a word the woman wrote. Did she write anything meaningful or memorable? Or did she just file daily boilerplate for the wire? I looked it up. She wrote a few books, but I have never seen one in a newsroom. You would think if someone was called the “dean” of the White House press corps, a news junkie would have at least stumbled across her stuff accidentally.

As he often does, Joe Soucheray takes my opinion (of which I hadn’t devoted more than 3 seconds of thought to) and turns it into a masterpiece column.

I know who she was only because of what she looked like, not because I remember anything she ever wrote.

Lehman’s win at Senior PGA, and things fall further into place

Written on June 8th, 2010 by JuddTweet this! no shouts

Most Augusts my dad and I (and other people from year to year) travel to the ISC Mens World Fastpitch Tournament. This year it will be happening in Midland, Michigan. Last summer I had noticed that the PGA Championship was going to be held at Whistling Straits, in Kohler, Wisconsin (almost perfectly on the way), on the Friday before the softball tournament. For Father’s Day, I bought tickets for my dad and I to go on Friday, before we head the rest of the way to Michigan. The only golf tournament I’ve attended is the senior event that happens in a suburb of Minneapolis, and I thought it would be a great experience to see, not only a PGA Tour event, but a round of a major tournament. A couple of weeks ago, the experience took an even greater turn. By winning the Senior PGA Championship, my favorite golfer of all-time, Tom Lehman, has qualified for the regular PGA Tournament. Needless to say, my dad and I know who we will be following for at least a few holes that day.

It was also great to find out last night that he continued his great golf of 2010 and has also qualified for the United States Open. Some fun golf is ahead, and God is good!
