Don’t be selfish at the polls

When you take to the polls at your convenience on Tuesday, you may be inclined to vote along party lines, union lines, or for the candidate that will best serve your interests. I challenge you to think first about those who can’t help themselves, and then consider your own desires. Odds are that if you are reading this post you aren’t doing too badly. Sure, you could always use more money, a better job, or better health. If you stop to think about it, however, there is something you can personally do about that regardless of who our President is or who has the majority in the House of Representatives or the Senate. Usually what it requires is a little hard work.

Instead, consider first the unborn. Whether that be in the form of an embryo, or a fetus in his or her mother, they have no voice. You will hear that it’s a “privacy” issue or a “health” issue for the mother, but the fact is that the child has every bit of a right from God to live as the mother or father does. In very, very rare occasions does the life of an unborn child pose any threat to the health of the mother. Since the Roe v. Wade decision, 48 million babies have been murdered. The population of the United States is just over 300 million, so that means we are missing another 1/6th of our population!

Consider, also, the sick and the dying. How did the candidates in your state or city handle the Terri Schiavo situation? Were they standing up for the dignity of human life, or were they looking to play God and have the power over her life?

Third, consider the very, very dangerous prospects of cloning. Who is throwing an obscene amount of money at research that duplicates divinely-given life, and exploits human beings for the benefit of other human beings. Yes, I feel terrible for Michael J. Fox. Someday I believe that we will have a cure for someone like him, God willing. But, we cannot sacrifice the lives of others for Mr. Fox. I would say the same things if I were the one facing a very difficult and destructive balance of life. Besides, we simply haven’t had any success with embryonic stem cell research while we have had incredible results with adult stem cell research. Maybe, just maybe, God is telling us something here.

Lastly, consider the sanctity of marriage between one woman and one man. The whole purpose for family is procreation, as much as our secular culture tries to tell us otherwise. Consider the families you know that understand this versus those who do not, and I can almost guarantee you will see a start difference in their quality of life. Sure, the parents may not drive the fanciest cars or have the biggest houses, but they are surely happier. Make sure you are voting for those candidates who support a law defining marriage as the only union that serves God’s purpose for a family.

Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance as you go to the polls. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide others to vote, and to offer up their votes for God. Like anything else, we are called to love others before ourselves, and that also means that we must consider the consequences of our votes in terms of other people before ourselves.

My prayers are with you this Tuesday.
