Peanut products recall and online groceries

Written on February 6th, 2009 by Juddno shouts

I got the following message from Coborn’s Delivers yesterday:

Dear Valued Customer,

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to consumers nationwide that a Salmonella outbreak has been linked to consumption of products containing peanut butter and peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant.

We wanted to assure you that the products you have purchased from CobornsDelivers were NOT included in the warning, and that any affected products are removed from our SuperStore as soon as we receive a recall notice.

Should you happen to purchase a product from CobornsDelivers that is later recalled, we will immediately send an email notifying you of the recall.

This communication is being sent to you as a courtesy.  For more details you can view the FDA warning notice at: www.fda.gov

Thank you,

CobornsDelivers

P.S. Product Warning/Recall notification is one of the hidden benefits to shopping at CobornsDelivers. Because we keep track of everything you’ve purchased, we can notify you immediately if it’s affected by a product warning or recall. No guesswork, no worrying, no need to check mysterious codes on packaging. We simply send you an email. It’s something we hope we don’t have to do often, but isn’t it nice to know that we can?

I have to admit, this is a pretty re-assuring idea.  We don’t buy nearly all of our groceries online, but if there was a widespread outbreak of something (like the peanut butter thing), it might be a temporary way to increase your safety.

Two must-see grocery sites in the Twin Cities

Written on January 25th, 2009 by Juddno shouts

The web, being a cluttered place the way it is, rarely produces something new that I am amazed by. Well, I guess I should further that statement by saying that if those ideas that are out there, I am not finding them.  Here, though, are a couple of them that relate to grocery shopping, something most of us have to do from time to time.  The average U.S. household spends $3240 a year on groceries.

1. Coborn’s Delivers (cobornsdelivers.com): This was formerly Simon Delivers, and I had used Simon in the past and just when I was getting excited about it, they folded.  It coincided with the near-$4 gas prices and the rising cost of shipping.  Coborn’s is pretty much the same as that.  Still, as far as online grocery shopping and a very successful way of doing it, Coborn’s is the best in class.  CNN

2. The Grocery Game (thegrocerygame.com): This is a site that provides information on grocery shopping I have never seen before.  They talk about the trends in shopping — the 12-week cycle — and how to exploit it for maximum savings.  For a small fee (and for which you can try for a month for just a dollar) they will even provide you with a list for each of your local grocery stores listing items that you should stock up on and a separate grouping of items that are fair deals, but that you should only buy if you immediately need them.

I’ll leave the rest of the details for you to explore.  If you have any must-see sites for me in the meantime, please leave a comment.

If you get a chance, go check out my friend’s blog over at David Carlson Politics.  I’m not a 100% on board with his politics, but there’s a lot of good, interesting, and insightful stuff there.

Google Reader

Written on August 2nd, 2006 by Juddno shouts

The new Google Reader is one of the greatest things that has ever come along for those who regularly read blogs. You can add “subscriptions” to all of your favorite blogs (that have RSS feeds — basically any blog that uses Wordpress, blogger, or Moveable Type (which covers most blogs that I have seen), plus many more. It will then, upon hitting refresh, look for new posts from all of the blogs you are subscribed to. Many of the online newspapers also have RSS feeds, as well as ESPN.com and many magazine websites. It is like compiling your own newspaper, of sorts. If you aren’t sure if your favorite site has an RSS feed, no problem. Just copy the URL and paste it into the search tool in Google Reader and it will either find the feed and allow you to subscribe or it will tell you that it can’t find a feed.

If you couple that with the ability to create RSS feeds from Google News, you can truly have your own newspaper. You can do a search for say “Minnesota Twins.” Then on the left side of the Google News page you will see RSS. Copy the link location for that link and paste it into Google Reader and you will have an update every time an article comes out with “Minnesota Twins” in it for any newspaper across the country that is in Google’s search realm.

If you want to try out Google Reader, click here.

Here is a great tool for plotting out your walk to check distance as well as a rough estimate of calories burned on that trail. It uses google’s map system. Very cool.
